Cardiac Arrest Likely Cause in Death of Guam Firefighter

41-year-old Guam Fire Department veteran passed away Thursday night while on duty.

An autopsy is set to be conducted on Monday on a firefighter who died on the job last week. Guam Fire Department Acting Chief Mike Uncangco says an internal investigation was conducted after the death of 41-year-old James Periera of Mongmong passed away last Thursday night while working at the Agat Fire Station.

Chief Uncangco says the investigation looked into Periera's death in terms of safety and whether there was any foul play, and added that both theories have been ruled out, as the Guam Fire Department believes he died from cardiac arrest.

Periera was transported to the Guam Naval Hospital where he was pronounced dead and then taken to the Guam Memorial Hospital's morgue for an autopsy by Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola.
