DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo.
An early morning fire destroyed a Douglas County home Sunday and sent two firefighters to the hospital with injuries from falling.
Franktown Fire Deputy Chief Dave Woodrick said dispatchers received a call reporting a fire in the 6900 block on North Ruby Lane just after midnight. When firefighters arrived, the home was engulfed in flames.
No one was home at the time of the fire, Woodrick said. He said five dogs escaped from inside and that horses in a barn next to the house were safe.
Two firefighters were injured when they slipped and fell on ice while fighting the flames. Both were treated at the scene and then sent to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Woodrick said the house would probably be a total loss.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Thirty-five firefighters from Franktown Fire, Elizabeth Fire, Rattlesnake Fire, and South Metro Fire and Rescue battled the blaze. Because of the remote location, Woodrick said crews had to shuttle water to the home.
