Firehouse World to Offer Myriad Of Courses

Feb. 16, 2012
The 10th annual Firehouse World conference kicks off Sunday.

Whether it’s the latest in building construction, investigations, technology, safety or EMS practices, Firehouse World will have it and many other topics well covered next week in San Diego.

“There’s still plenty of time to register and take advantage of the various classes,” Firehouse World Show Director Harvey Eisner said.

The event kicks off Sunday with a number of hands-on-training classes and pre-conference sessions.

Eisner said this is an opportunity for firefighters to get valuable training from veterans, who are eager to share their knowledge and skill.

As for the conference itself, he pointed out that attendees also will be hearing many interesting presentations that have never been given before. Incident commanders will be sharing experiences that occurred during several recent events that drew national attention.

One of those was the air show disaster in Reno. Chief Michael Hernandez will explain the department’s response, and issues they faced while dealing with the mass casualty incident that left 11 dead and more than 70 injured. Find out how they triaged and moved the patients to the proper facilities.

He also will delve into the logistics involved when his crews responded to a massive wildfire that destroyed 30 homes and over 2,000 acres.

Eisner said Firehouse World is fortunate to have Hernandez delivering the keynote on Tuesday morning.

Also, the chiefs’ forum won’t be your run-of-the mill lecture. Each of the four chiefs will address a specific issue to generate and encourage discussion.

Officials involved include Phoenix Assistant Chief Todd Harms; Scottsdale Fire Chief Garret Olson; Mike Worthington, Center for Public Safety Excellence; and
San Francisco Assistant Chief Dave Franklin.

Also this year, there are a number of EMS-related sessions with a myriad of topics ranging from the dangers associated with responding to chemical suicides and meth labs, to handling obese patients.
