INDIANAPOLIS -- A fire destroyed a vacant house before spreading to a nearby home where two people were sleeping, investigators said.

Firefighters were called to the 500 block of Powell Place, near 36th Street and Central Avenue, just before 2:30 a.m.

When crews arrived, the vacant home was engulfed by flames.

"From the front of the house to the back of the house, we had fire and we couldn't allow any crews in. So we pulled everybody out and we went defensive," said Lt. Vincent Vaughn.

The fire then spread to a nearby home, where two people had been sleeping. Both were able to escape safely.

It took 50 firefighters to bring the blaze under control.
