A fire tore through a DeKalb County condominium complex early Friday morning, hospitalizing several residents.

Fire Chief Norman Augustin told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that people could be heard screaming in the background on the 911 call.

Crews arrived at the Tamarack Condominiums on Blazing Pine Path around 4:40 a.m. to find heavy smoke and fire coming from an upstairs unit.

Augustin said the fire extended down into the floor system, creating dangerous conditions for firefighters.

Residents who were initially believed to be trapped had escaped on their own, but where injured in the process.

Three people were transported to a local hospital -- two with minor burns and one with major lacerations.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
