SOLSBERRY, Ind. -- One Eastern Greene firefighter was treated at the hospital for a heat-related illness after firefighters spent an estimated five hours extinguishing a barn fire Thursday evening.

The firefighter became overwhelmed by Thursday evening's hot and humid temperatures combined with the heat of the fire. He has been treated and released from the hospital, according to Eastern Fire Department deputy chief Austin Combs.

The landowner called firefighters to the fire on the 7000 block of North Britton Road about 7:30 p.m.

Firefighters found the single-story, wooden framed barn with tin siding engulfed in flames and it collapsed, Combs said.

Combs deemed the 100-by-80 foot barn and its contents a total loss. It was full of farm equipment, tractors, a truck and grain bins.

It took about two hours to extinguish the blaze, and another three hours to extinguish hot spots, he said. Area firefighters from Van Buren, Center, Clay and Highland townships assisted.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
