The blaze started at the firehouse on Elam Road shortly after 10:15 p.m., according to WTVF-TV.

"It's just a fire chief's worst nightmare, you know, for the fire station to burn," Rutherford County Fire Rescue Chief Larry Farley told the new station.

Farley said that the crew had left the station for training when they received a call for smoke from a bay door.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames.

The fire chief said that one firefighter made his way into the station and was able to get one of the engines out to safety.

Fire investigators are currently trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
