In addition to hiring and retaining career firefighters, the grant money is used for recruitment efforts by volunteer departments.

The goal of SAFER is to enhance fire departments' abilities to comply
with staffing, response and operational standards. During these tough economic times, the federal money will enable many cities to maintain their forces.
