Ten Oregon Department of Forestry contract firefighters en route to the Briley Mountain Fire were injured early Tuesday morning after their van crashed head on with a tractor-trailer.

Oregon State Police say the driver of the van fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic, colliding with the truck around 2:15 a.m. on Route 126, according to KATU-TV.

All of the firefighters were transported to area hospitals and all but one were released by the afternoon.

Firefighter Marcelino Cuesta Romero, 39, is listed in critical condition at St. Charles Medical Center.

The driver of the van, Firefighter Jeremy A. Miesner, was cited for failing to drive within the lane.

The driver and passenger of the tractor-trailer were both uninjured.
