Two Dead After Okla. Fire Truck Collides With Van

Two people died Sunday after their van was hit by a fire truck responding to a grass fire.

SHAMROCK, Okla. -- Two people died Sunday after the van they were traveling in was hit by a fire truck responding to a grass fire in Creek County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Janey Wellington, 68, and Tony Lee Hammock, 72, both of Drumright, died at the scene. Wellington was wearing a seat belt; Hammock was not, troopers said.

Wellington was driving and Hammock was a passenger in a van traveling eastbound on State Highway 16 near Shamrock about 3:45 p.m. An eastbound Olive Fire Department fire truck on its way to a grass fire attempted to pass the van near 481st West Avenue.

As the fire truck was passing, the van slowed down and attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway. The fire truck hit the van broadside, troopers said.

The driver of the fire truck, Joshua Perryman, 23, of Drumright, was treated at a hospital in Bristow for injuries that were not life-threatening, troopers said.

A passenger in the fire truck, William Campbell, 27, of Jennings, was not injured.

The road was closed for more than two hours after the crash.
