Shreveport firefighters were called to a blaze at a funeral home early Wednesday morning that destroyed part of the structure.

Crews responded to the fire at Patterson Funeral Home in the 1200 block of North Hearne Avenue around 5:30 a.m. to find the building fully engulfed, according to The Shreveport Times.

There was one body inside the funeral home during the blaze and firefighters were able to safely remove it, department spokesman Scott Wolverton told the newspaper.

Clouds of black smoke were seen from at least a mile away as flames shot from the rear of the structure.

Crews were unable to enter due to the extension of the fire and instead went into a defensive attack and managed to save a portion of the building.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
