Ladder Hits Power Line During Va. Training Exercise

Sept. 7, 2012
Roanoke County firefighters struck a high-voltage line while extending a 110-foot ladder.

A power line was hit during a Roanoke County Fire and Rescue training exercise Thursday night, causing several explosions to shake sections of southwest Roanoke County.

Cave Spring Fire Station volunteer firefighters were conducting the exercise in two trucks on Commonwealth Drive, a commercial street southwest of Tanglewood Mall.

Fire and rescue spokeswoman Jennifer Conley Sexton said firefighters struck a high-voltage line while extending a 110-foot ladder from one of the trucks. There were no injuries reported.

Both trucks involved in the exercise sustained significant damage. The loud booms heard in the area were triggered by blown transformers.

Appalachian Power Co. spokesman Todd Burns said there were no reports of power outages after the incident.
