A Getzville assistant fire chief was injured early Wednesday morning when a wrong-way driver collided head-on with his department SUV.

Assistant Chief Chris Kaplewicz was transported to a local hospital following the crash and was recuperating at home after being released, according to WIVB-TV.

The driver of the other vehicle, 61-year-old Sandra Metzler, also was hospitalized and underwent surgery.

Officials told the news station that the crash occurred in the 1800 block of Millsport Highway around 1 a.m. as Kaplewicz was responding to a call.

Fire Chief Bob Zacher told the newspaper that Kaplewicz is a very dedicated member of the department and should be back on the job soon.

"He seems to be OK," he said just hours after the crash. "I am sure he's going to be sore today they released him, checked him over and gave him a clean bill of health."

Firefighters needed to extricate Metzler from her vehicle.

Amherst police are currently investigating the crash.
