CERES, Calif. -- Firefighters rescued a woman from the second floor of a smoke-filled burning house Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., neighbors reported smoke coming from the upper floor of a home in the 800 block of Rocky Brook Drive.

Crews from the Ceres Fire Department responded, found the front door locked and forced their way into the house. Thick smoke filled the residence from the second floor down to about 5 feet from ground level, said Sgt. Jose Berber of the Ceres Police Department.

A woman's screams could be heard from the second floor, Berber said. Three firefighters hurried up the stairs and found a 42-year-old woman at the top of the landing. She was carried out of the home and received treatment on the scene for smoke inhalation before being taken to a hospital. She didn't appear to have any other injuries, Berber said, but her condition was unknown.

After the rescue, firefighters returned to the inside of the home and put out the flames, which are believed to have started in the kitchen. The cause of the blaze had not been determined.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, but the rest of the home suffered smoke damage.
