Injured San Jose Firefighter Released From Hospital

A veteran San Jose firefighter who collapsed while battling a blaze late last month was released from the hospital Wednesday.

Firefighter Frank Ryan had been at Regional Medical Center since suffering a heart attack shortly before noon on Aug. 30 as crews were gaining control of a three-alarm fire St. Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish at 389 East Santa Clara Street, according to KTVU-TV.

Ryan was transported to the hospital in critical condition and received round-the-clock support from his fellow firefighters, who took shifts visiting the ICU waiting room.

Off-duty firefighters slept in cots in the waiting room overnight, money was raised to fly his five siblings to San Jose and at least 20 firefighters were at the hospital on Sept. 4 when he awoke.
