Fire investigators were still sifting through the rubble Sunday afternoon after an early-morning mobile home fire claimed the lives of a grandfather and his grandson.

Brownsville Fire Chief Lenny Perez said fire struck a mobile home at 209 Dix Road shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday. The home near Ruben Torrez Boulevard and La Feria Road likely was a total loss, he said.

Perez said a woman who was in the home escaped the blaze. A neighbor drove her to the hospital, where she was treated and released. The grandfather died at the scene. The grandson died at the hospital, Perez said, adding that it appeared the woman who escaped was the grandfather's wife.

The names of the victims had not yet been released Sunday afternoon, pending notification of family members, Perez said.

He added that seven fire investigators, including two from neighboring Rio Gande Valley cities, were investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Perez said more information on the fire would be released today.
