Five New Orleans Firefighters Fall Through Floor

Three firefighters and one captain fell through the floor of a second floor unit while another captain fell through the floor of a neighboring unit during an apartment fire Sunday morning.

Five New Orleans firefighters fell through the floors of two separate units of a burning apartment building Sunday morning.

Three firefighters and one captain fell through the floor of a second floor unit while another captain fell through the floor of a neighboring unit, according to a fire department news release.

Crews responded to the reported fire at the Audubon Point Apartment at 4547 Maple Leaf Drive around 7:25 a.m. to find flames and heavy dark smoke coming from the windows of a first floor unity of the two-story building.

Firefighters forced their way inside to search for occupants, but were soon notified by management for the complex that only one unit was occupied while the rest were undergoing renovation.

All five firefighters injured during the search fell through to the first floor, where the fire originated.Two firefighters were transported to an area hospital with varying degrees of back, ankle and knee pain.

The three other firefighters remained on duty.

The blaze was brought under control by 8:29 a.m.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
