FAIRFIELD, Mass. -- A truck holding recycled metal and plastic caught fire early Monday morning, with the blaze visible from the nearby highway.

Assistant Chief Chris Tracy said the fire at 32 Webster St. was extinguished fairly quickly, but at its height it burned so bright that it was difficult to see whether any other property was affected.

"The cab was completely gone and the front tires and a portion of the undercarriage were also burning," Tracy said.

"The call had come in initially as a house fire and we got multiple calls on it," the assistant fire chief said. "But we had it out in 15 or 20 minutes and it never spread to the adjacent houses or to the dumpster."

The fire broke out at about 4 a.m., officials said, and firefighters returned about 4 hours later when callers reported that it had broken out again. That turned out to be steam from the water poured on the burning engine block, officials said.

The site is near Porsche of Fairfield and the Bridgeport border, off Commerce Drive.
