Iowa Fire Chief Dies While Responding to Blaze

Gilmore City Fire Chief Larry D. Nielsen was responding to a barn fire on Oct. 9 when he fell ill

The fire chief of the Gilmore City Fire Department died on Oct.9 after suffering an apparent heart attack while on duty.

Fire Chief Larry D. Nielsen, 60, was responding to a barn fire in a department apparatus around 5:30 p.m. when he fell ill, according to the USFA.

The firefighter driving the rig immediately pulled to the side of the road and called for help.

Nielsen was treated at the scene by an EMS crew and transported to a local hospital when he died.

Funeral Arrangements

Visitation for Fire Chief Nielsen will be held on Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gilmore City School with funeral services to follow.
