A car crashed head-on with a fire truck in Germany Monday night, killing a firefighter and the civilian driver and leaving another firefighter seriously injured.
The two volunteer firefighters from Vechelde were headed to training when a BMW veered to the left on Highway 65, causing the collision with the fire apparatus at approximately 6:16 p.m., according to Peiner Allgemeine
The firefighter driving the pumper was pronounced dead at the scene while his comrade was unresponsive after being extricated from the destroyed cab and transported to a hospital in Brunswick.
The civilian driver of the BMW also was pronounced dead at the scene.
The highway was closed while officials worked to reconstruct the crash but was reopened later that night.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the deadly crash.
