ALBANY, N.Y. -- A young girl pulled from the scene of a house fire Wednesday morning was flown to a Boston hospital.

Albany firefighters pulled the 3- or 4-year-old child from the 20 Benson St. home after three other children and a woman got out safely.

Firefighters handed the rescued child to police Officer Mike Romano, who administered CPR along with a fire department paramedic.

Fire Chief Robert Forezzi said the girl suffered serious burns and was flown to a Boston hospital for treatment.

The fire was reported late Wednesday morning. Flames were consuming the structure when firefighters arrived, but the fire was quickly put out.

A neighbor from five doors away, who came outside to investigate after Niagara Mohawk turned off her power, said she heard screaming and a woman calling "My baby, my baby."

The neighbor, Darlene Tenney, 41, said she smelled smoke and saw flames. She ran with her daughter Faith Tenney, 14, to the back of the house.

"We tried to get in but the flames were too much. We couldn't see anything," Darlene Tenney said.

The pair said they helped usher three children out of the home, but could not get to a child who was in the living room.

"We did what we could. Afterward, I just sat on the steps and cried," Darlene Tenney said.

The exact ages of the children are unknown, but all are younger than school age, according to Mayor Jerry Jennings, who was at the scene, as was Police Chief Steven Krokoff.

Jennings said the mother has one other child, who was in school when the fire broke out.

Another child suffered minor burns, but the mother and other two children are uninjured.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
