A fire in Hamtramck burned two homes and injured a firefighter overnight.

Hamtramck Fire Chief Paul Wilk said one of the dozen firefighters battling the fire inhaled smoke, but was treated and released from a local hospital.

The fire, which was reported at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, began in a vacant home at 8822 Lumpkin, then blew into a multi-family occupied home at 8816 Lumpkin.

"We had pretty good high winds coming out of the north, so it blew it right in it," Wilk said, adding that firefighters were able to stop the fire before it ignited a third, occupied home next door. "Both were going when we got there. It was already blowing out of the roof of the second house."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. The occupied multi-family home will most likely need to be demolished, Wilk said. He was unsure how many people lived there, but all were able to escape the fire safely.
