Nov. 13--A Minnesota fire marshal will be in Hallock, Minn., Wednesday to investigate the cause of a fire that heavily damaged the Hallock Co-op Elevator.
Dozens of volunteers from seven fire departments battled the blaze for more than four hours in frigid temperatures after the fire was reported at about 10:46 a.m. Monday.
The fire was brought under control by about 3 p.m., according to Kittson County Sheriff Kenny Hultgren.
Hallock and Kennedy fire departments, along with Kittson County Volunteer Ambulance initially responded to the fire, which was located near the top of the elevator's north tower.
Fire departments from Lancaster, Lake Bronson and Karlstad, Minn., as well as Pembina, N.D., also were called in, along with a ladder truck from East Grand Forks.
"Part of the problem we were having was the fire was burning above the sprinkler heads," said Hultgren, who also is a volunteer firefighter. "It was burning up in the rafters."
Firefighters fastened a nozzle to an 80-foot boom on a crane from Johnson's Standard in Hallock to pour water into holes near the top of the tower.
When the East Grand Forks ladder truck arrived, it was set up on the tower's north side, to make sure the fire was out, he said.
"The elevator resembles an ice castle today," Hultgren said Tuesday morning.
