North Carolina Chief Dies of Apparent Heart Attack

A North Carolina fire chief died Nov. 7 after falling ill at the scene of an incident.

Kernersville Chief Walter M. Summerville III, 55, was with his department at a triple shooting on Nov. 6, and went to sit in his vehicle after telling his crews he wasn't feeling well, according to the USFA.

The 25-year veteran went to work the following day, but left early.

He was found deceased at his home by a family member.

Summerville rose through the ranks in the Kernersville Fire Department.

In addition, he graduated in April 2012 from the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer program.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 11.
