Nov. 29--An off-duty Clackamas Fire District 1 firefighter has been honored for trying to save a baby's life while confronted by two aggressive dogs.

Daniel Grigoryev, a firefighter-emergency medical technician currently assigned to Holcomb Station 9, has received the Fire Chief's Medal of Honor from the Portland Fire Bureau.

On July 17, Grigoryev heard a neighbor screaming that something was wrong with her baby. Running over, he encountered two aggressive dogs. The dog's owner restrained one while Grigoryev assessed the baby, which had stopped breathing. He then ordered the mother to call 9-1-1

While Grigoryev began performing CPR, one of the dogs tried to bite him. He then took the baby -- which was not responding -- outside to continue treatment. As soon as he got outside, the dogs' owner let the other dog go. It immediately bit Grigoryev, though he was not seriously injured.

Meanwhile, Grigoryev realized the baby was slipping away, a victim of sudden infant death. However, he continued to perform CPR until arriving Portland firefighters confirmed that the baby had died.

Grigoryev, 26, served as a volunteer for two years before he was hired as a career firefighter 11 months ago.
