Dec. 14--FORT WORTH -- A grassfire driven by stiff wind burned about 100 acres and threatened two neighborhoods Thursday afternoon in far south Fort Worth, the fire department reported.

Fourteen units from Fort Worth and a brush truck from Everman brought the blaze under control after nearly two hours.

Flames were reported at 1:49 p.m. in the 1200 block of McPherson Road, according to dispatch records.

Engineer Tim Hardeman, a fire department spokesman, reported at 3:42 p.m. that the fire was under control. The cause was still undetermined at 5 p.m., he said.

"Fifteen mph winds with gusts to 25 mph pushed the fire rapidly through the very dry grass, brush and timber," he said.

A gas well site was not threatened, but a company representative "shut off the well compressor as a precaution," Hardeman said.

The region was under a "grass fire danger statement" issued by the National Weather Service. Tarrant County is under a burn ban.
