Jan. 02--The Owensboro Fire Department responded to a house fire call at 4:02 p.m. Tuesday after neighbors reported the fire at 921 Locust St.

Fire Chief Steve Mitchell said the house is vacant, and the owner is unknown.

"It was already fully involved when we got here," Mitchell said. "We're just trying to figure out how it got so far along."

The fire had reached the attic by the time firefighters arrived, Mitchell said.

The house on the north side of the damaged house is also vacant.

Firefighters evacuated the house on the south side of the damaged home.

"Luckily no one got hurt, but I still have kittens and dogs in there. I hope they're OK with all this smoke," said Lorraine Eskilson, who was evacuated from the neighboring home. She moved to the 900 block of Locust Street in April.

"No one lives in there, but people go in all the time," she said. "They go in drinking, there's graffiti on the walls. Who knows what."

Mitchell said there were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is undetermined.

"It'll probably be (Wednesday) before we know what caused it," he said.
