Jan. 03--Three small fires were set inside the office of Macon Symphony Orchestra, 400 Poplar St., just before 3 a.m. New Year's Day.

Mercer University police responded to a burglar alarm and officers called firefighters after discovering smoke inside the building, said Sgt. Ben Gleaton of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department.

One of the fires set on the second floor activated a sprinkler head. Water caused "extensive damage" to the first and second floors, Gleaton said.

There was no sign of forced entry.

Gleaton said the fire has been ruled an arson.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the fire department at 751-2713, Mercer police at 301-4357 or the Georgia Arson Control Hotline at (800) 282-5804, which offers up to $10,000 for information.
