A firefighter has been burnt and his truck badly damaged while battling a fire near Gunning, north of Canberra.

The grassfire has burnt out 76 hectares around Gundaroo Road, about 25 minutes from Canberra.

The fire is continuing to burn, but has been brought under control by more than 80 firefighters and three water bombing helicopters.

The injured firefighter has been transferred to Sydney Hospital in a stable condition, after being flown to Goulburn Hospital suffering burns to 5 per cent of his body.

The firefighter was one of the first on the scene and received burns when his truck was engulfed in the fast moving fire front.

Police have set up roadblocks preventing traffic getting through to the area via Sutton, but the road to Collector and Gunning remains open at this stage.
