A federal grant will position Newark as the lead fire agency in Licking County, allowing it to train commanders of neighboring departments to cut down on firefighter injuries and losses, the mayor announced yesterday.
Most of the $95,260 Assistance to Firefighters grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will go toward such training. Newark plans to establish its own center, where it will offer computer simulations to its own commanders as well those in up to 20 neighboring departments, Mayor Jeff Hall said in a news release yesterday.
In addition, the grant will pay for certification for 10 firefighters and will allow the city to buy 20 sets of gear for first responders.
