CLEAR LAKE — Parents were awakened by their 3-year-old child early Saturday morning, alerting them to the fire in their cabin home in Clear Lake.

Crews from both the Clear Lake and Big Lake fire departments responded to the 2:47 a.m. call to find that what started as a wood stove fire in the 5,000-square-foot home on Teak Lane had spread to the roof, said Brett Berg, chief of both departments.

The firefighters cut holes in the frozen peaked roof — a dangerous venture, Berg added — and took about an hour and 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The blaze was contained to one part of the home, but the three residents were displaced to their nearby guest home.

Because of the high vaulted ceiling, the smoke alarm didn’t sound until after crews arrived, Berg said.
