A Uniontown volunteer firefighter is facing theft charges after police allege he stole $1,000 from the fire department social hall in the city in September.

Paul D. McCormick, 48, of Uniontown was charged with theft and receiving stolen property, after police allege he took money from the cash register while he was working at the social hall on there.

Alvin Sapp, volunteer fire department association president, told city police that $400 was missing from the cash register at the fire hall on Dunbar Street Sept. 27. Sapp told police that McCormick was working at the register when the shortage was discovered.

Hanula said McCormick "found" the missing money in his pocket and returned it to Sapp while police were there.

Sapp also told police that $500 was missing from the register on Sept. 6 and $500 was unaccounted for on Sept. 20, Hanula said.

Sapp indicated that McCormick was working at the register on those dates as well, police said.

Hanula said that when officers questioned McCormick about the missing money, he admitted to stealing the cash. McCormick will face a preliminary hearing at a later date.
