Jan. 21--TERRE HAUTE -- A 75-year-old retired school teacher has died as the result of a fire Saturday at her Terre Haute home.

An autopsy has shown that Jude Ann Bingham, a retired Otter Creek Middle School teacher, died of a heart attack and burns from the fire, Vigo County Coroner Susan Amos today told the Tribune-Star.

Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher confirmed that the woman was found in a doorway between the kitchen and dining room of the home by firefighters who responded to the 1300 block of Locust Street. The kitchen area of the home had most of the fire damage, he said.

Bingham had severe burns to about 70 percent of her body, Fisher reported. She was transported for treatment to Union Hospital, where she later died.

Twenty-two personnel with four fire engines, a ladder truck and medic unit responded to the scene after being dispatched at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The cause and origin of the fire are not available at this time, Fisher told the Tribune-Star today. However, he said the fire was not of suspicious origin.
