Feb. 01--St. Paul firefighters rescued a teenage girl who collapsed in a smoke-filled house on the East Side on Thursday afternoon.

The 16-year-old was found not breathing in a second-floor bedroom of the house at 974 Earl St. Firefighters were called there at 3:10 p.m. after a fire erupted in the home's kitchen. The rest of the house was full of smoke when they arrived.

Firefighters began CPR on the girl, who was the home's only occupant at the time, and they were followed by paramedics and a pair of doctors from Regions Hospital who had arrived at the scene.

The girl began breathing again and was taken to Regions Hospital, then transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was placed in a hyperbaric chamber. She remained unconscious Thursday evening but her exact condition was unknown.

Damage to the house was estimated at $10,000. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
