Feb. 09--Two firefighters were injured at a house fire in Reading Township Friday night.

The Liberty Fire Co. No. 1 firefighters received non-life threatening injuries while fighting the fire at 240 Rife Road, said Liberty Fire Co. No. 1 Fire Chief Lee Byers.

One was transported to Hanover Hospital for smoke inhalation. The other was not transported after spraining a knee.

The fire started in the chimney around 6:30 p.m., Byers said. At the scene, crews were told that the boyfriend of the homeowner had lit the woodstove, then smelled smoke and saw smoke coming out of the walls. Only the boyfriend was home at the time.

Byers said he estimates about $100,000 in damages to both the property and belongings.

The area between the second floor and attic of the house suffered the most damage, but the entire house was filled with smoke when fire crews arrived. The flames took about 20 minutes to control and another 45 minutes to one hour to completely extinguish.

Crews used more than 800 feet of water lines to take water from a creek a few miles away from the burning house, Byers said.

Fire and rescue companies from Hampton, East Berlin, Lake Meade, New Oxford, Heidlersberg, York Springs, West York, Hanover and Penn Township responded.
