A 49-year-old Marietta firefighter has died after collapsing at the scene of a crash on Thursday afternoon. News reports say the veteran firefighter died of a massive heart attack.

A 49-year-old Marietta firefighter has died after collapsing at the scene of a crash on Thursday afternoon. News reports say the veteran firefighter died of a massive heart attack.

According to the newspaper The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Lonnie Lee Nutt, a firefighter engineer appeared to suffer a medical emergency after he had driven an engine to a wreck with injuries less than a mile from the station. He was traveling with two others in the apparatus.

A statement from the fire department said as the firefighters began giving aid to the victims, Nutt fell to the ground with his own medical issue.

Firefighters helped Nutt until an ambulance arrived and transported him to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The newspaper reported that Nutt started his career with the Marietta in May 1994 and had served as a firefighter, an inspector, and investigator and most recently as an engineer.

Nutt, a native of Oklahoma, lived in Kennesaw with his wife. He is survived by a daughter.
