Tenn. Firefighters to Paint 'In God We Trust' on Station

Medford volunteers voted to paint the nation's motto on the side of their station in letters just as large as the two-story building will accommodate.

March 13--LAKE CITY -- The nation's motto, "In God We Trust," will be painted on one side of the two-story Medford Volunteer Fire Department station on US 25W just south of Lake City, Anderson County Commissioner Tim Isbel said today.

Isbel, a member of the department's board of directors, said the board voted 7-0 Tuesday night to approve the move.

The sign, he said, "will be as large as the building will allow." The block building on Lake City Highway is owned by the fire department.

The vote comes on the heels of a decision by Anderson County Commission to place the motto on the courthouse. A commission committee has recommended that signs with the motto be placed above all four entrances to the building.

Isbel said he's hoping to build momentum to have the motto placed on other volunteer fire department stations. The Medford department responds to fires from north Clinton to south Lake City, he said.
