A sprinkler system saved The King's Wok Buffet restaurant in Silverdale when a food cart caught fire Thursday.

March 15--SILVERDALE -- A Thursday morning fire at the King's Wok Buffet was extinguished by the sprinkler system, with minimal damage done.

Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews credited a recent upgrade of the system that was part of an extensive remodel, said CKFR spokeswoman Ileana LiMarzi.

The same Silverdale Way complex in 1998 incurred extensive damage when a fire in a sports bar gutted that business and temporarily closed 10 other businesses with smoke damage. That fire caused $1.2 million in damage. Arson was suspected at the time.

In Thursday's fire, CKFR responded to an alarm indicating the sprinkler had activated. Firefighters found a fire that had started in a food cart at the rear of the kitchen. The sprinkler system had kept the fire in check, and firefighters were able to put it out with only an extinguisher.

The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage. There was no structural damage. The Kitsap County fire marshal said the fire appears accidental.
