A house fire killed a Fontana woman and injured her son in a early Thursday morning fire.

March 14--FONTANA -- A woman died and her adult son was injured when an early-morning fire erupted Thursday at their Fontana home, San Bernardino County Fire officials said.

Shortly after 2 a.m., firefighters were called out to the 9200 block of Hemlock Street by a man who reported his neighbor's house was on fire, according to a fire news release.

Firefighters found a man sitting outside the home who appeared to have been suffering from smoke inhalation. Authorities later confirmed the man lived at the Hemlock Street home along with his mother, officials said.

Crews entered the home and found a woman lying on the ground, according to the release.

Paramedics transported the unidentified mother and son to a hospital where she later died. The son is recovering.

Investigators determined the neighbor had gone outside to smoke when he noticed the blaze, officials said. He then began to bang on the doors and windows to alert the mother and son inside.

The son made it outside and tried to extinguish the fire himself with a hose but was unsuccessful.

It's unclear if the home was equipped with smoke detectors.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
