March 20--ST. LOUIS -- A 6-year-old boy was taken to St. Louis Children's Hospital late Wednesday morning after a fire destroyed a two-story home in the 4500 block of Emerson Avenue.

St. Louis Fire Department officials said a call about the fire came in about 11 a.m. The home was occupied by a man and a woman and four children.

The house is a total loss. Capt. Mike Killingsworth said the cause of the fire was still unknown.

Firefighter Jake Buhnerkempe said he found the boy trapped on the first floor of the home. He was unconscious.

"We just scooped him up and got him to the medic," he said. "We train for this every day."
