A 15-year-old llama was rescued by Canby firefighters after he got stuck in mud up to his belly.

April 02--Firefighters freed a llama that stepped into a marshy area by a creek southeast of Canby and sank in the mud up to his belly.

Sgt. Pepper, a 15-year-old llama, was rescued about 6 p.m. Tuesday after six firefighters rolled him out of the mud, said Canby Fire District Division Chief Troy Buzalsky.

The animal was walking along an established trail at his home in the 25000 block of South Central Point Road about an hour earlier when his right foreleg and right hindleg become stuck.

"He was calm the entire time," Buzalsky said of the llama. "He knew he wasn't going anywhere for a while."

A local veterinarian sedated Sgt. Pepper and it took about 30 seconds for the firefighters to force the llama out, Buzalsky said. He was not hurt.
