April 05--Firefighters from three departments fought for more than 12 hours to put out a brushfire that started early Thursday in Yaphank, Suffolk County police and fire officials said.
The fire, in an apparently undeveloped area along Main Street, was reported at about 6 a.m., fire officials said.
It was put out at 7 p.m., said a Ridge firefighter shortly after returning from the blaze.
About 3 acres were destroyed in the fire that burned off William Floyd Parkway and Colonial Woods Drive, he said.
No homes were burned and no injuries were reported, officials said.
Volunteers from Yaphank, Ridge and Manorville put out the fire.
The cause was unknown, but the National Weather Service had issued a Red Flag warning for Long Island on Wednesday, meaning the dry, windy conditions were conducive to the outbreak of wildfires and brushfires. That warning was lifted late Wednesday.
A year ago this month, more than 100 Suffolk and Nassau fire departments fought for more than two days to control an inferno that burned 1,000 acres and destroyed several homes in the Ridge/Manorville area during a dry spell, the worst wildfire since 1995.
