The three-person crew of a California fire engine said they spotted an injured dog on their way back to the station and decided to help.
Lake Arrowhead Fire Department Engineer Ryan Beckers said he and colleagues, all paramedics, spotted the dog, Sadie, injured at the side of Highway 173 with owner Matthew Tippens and his mom, Brenda, while taking Engine 92 back to their fire station, The (Riverside) Press-Enterprise reported Monday.
The crew used their medical gear to bandage the dog's leg before heading to a nearby unmanned fire station, where they were able to wrap Sadie in a blanket and load her on a gurney in a spare ambulance.
The dog was taken to Rim Forest Animal Hospital, the crew said. They said they later were told the dog's injured leg was amputated but she is recovering.
