Four businesses were destroyed when fire ripped through a Fresno strip mall Tuesday.

April 17--A fire that destroyed four businesses in a strip mall early Tuesday in central Fresno started in the attic space of the building, quickly spread and took firefighters two hours to control, the Fresno Fire Department said.

The fire at 1760 N. First St. was reported about 2 a.m. and caused about $1.7 million in damages, the Fire Department said.

Firefighters initially tried to extinguished the blaze from inside the building. However, the fire and smoke grew, forcing firefighters to retreat and battle the blaze from the exterior.

Businesses destroyed in the blaze were the restaurants Thai Phooket and Train Depot, along with Jesse's Seafood Market and Super Suds Laundry.

The cause of the fire is unknown, the Fire Department said.

No one was injured.
