April 22--FORT WORTH -- Firefighters rescued a woman who was stranded on her second-story balcony after the apartment she was in caught fire early Sunday.

After arriving at the apartment complex in the 4500 block of Mermaid Lane about 1 a.m., Lt. David Tompkins, Josh Wright and Chase Pennington climbed a ladder to retrieve the woman, according to a news release from the Fort Worth Fire Department.

Pennington carried the woman down after the two other firefighters lifted her over the balcony railing. While the other firefighters were involved with the rescue, firefighter Eric Price prepared a hose line to fight the fire, the release said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, the release said. Her condition was unknown Sunday. An investigator concluded the fire started on the kitchen stove and was unintentionally set, the release said. No other injuries were reported.
