Ga. Firefighters Respond to Large Packing Plant Fire

May 1, 2013
Flames were seen shooting from the roof of a packing plant in Macon after witnesses heard at least two explosions early Wednesday morning.

May 01--At least two explosions erupted from the raging fire at the Pactiv packaging plant at the airport industrial park plant.

Flames are shooting through the roof and heavy black smoke is coming from the building near the Middle Georgia Regional Airport.

A second aerial ladder is now battling the flames.

Crews were called to 7670 Airport Drive shortly after 6 a.m. and found workers outside the plant, and heavy white smoke billowing from the roof.

As crews looked for the source of the fire, the blaze intensified and flames erupted.

Additional fire units have been called and crews began swapping out shortly after 7:30 a.m.

Workers say everyone is safe.

The smoke blankets the airport like heavy fog.

Firefighters say with all the packaging materials and wooden flats inside, they could be here for days tending to hot spots once they extinguish the fire.
