WATERVILLE, Maine -- Crews from Waterville, Winslow and Fairfield battled a fire on Main Street Friday that damaged two four-story structures -- one of them extensively, a Waterville Fire Department official confirmed.

The fire began about 4 p.m. Friday at 18 Main St., which houses among other things the Ink4Life Tattoos and Piercings and several apartment units, and spread to an adjacent building.

The building at 18 Main St. had extensive damage to its top two floors, according to Waterville fire Capt. Michael Michaud. He said that the fire extended to the third floor of the adjacent building but said that fire was quickly extinguished and damage was relatively minor.

Michaud said that the fire's cause remained under investigation late Friday night. A dollar estimate for the damage was not immediately available.

Traffic was diverted around the fire scene for several hours. No injuries were reported.

Members of the Sidney Fire Department were called in to provide station coverage in Waterville, according to a firefighter.
