L.A. Firefighters Say Abandoned Barrels Are No Hazard

Suspicious barrels along the railroad tracks in Pomona are filled with soil and pose no hazard, according to fire officials.

May 08--Los Angeles County fire officials determined this morning that several suspicious 55-gallon drums, which were located next to railroad tracks in Pomona, presented no public health risk..

A county fire HazMat crew responded about 8 a.m. to the location of the drums in the 1400 block of West First Street, in Pomona. After investigating the scene, the crew determined the drums were filled with soil and were not a risk, fire officials said.

The drums were located in the same area where a woman died last month after she jumped in front of a train.

A car fire occurred in the same area last night. Employees at the nearby Gould-Bass Company described the area as "extremely violent," and they do not stay in the area after dark.

Pomona police declined to comment.
