A firefighter was injured while battling a blaze Tuesday afternoon in a single-family home in a gated retirement community in South Barrington. East Dundee Fire Protection District responded to the fire at 8 Aztec Court at about 3:30 p.m.

The homeowner, a man who fire officials say wasn't easily mobile from a previous leg injury, had already been helped from the home when fire officials arrived, East Dundee Lt. Kevin Johnston said.

Landscapers passing by reportedly witnessed the fire and assisted the homeowner who was not injured and not transported for medical care, Johnston said.

A fire lieutenant injured his hand while working to put the blaze out. He was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.

East Dundee Fire was assisted by 13 other departments. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
