May 14--A man suspected of stealing and crashing a firetruck in Ross County this past weekend has died.

Brentley S. Montgomery, 19, of Lawrence County, was critically injured in the crash on Friday.

Authorities said a man broke into the Harrison Township Fire Department east of Chillicothe and stole a 2,200-gallon tanker truck. The truck was destroyed when it struck a guardrail and overturned less than a mile from the station.

Montgomery was thrown from the wreck. He taken to Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University. The volunteer firefighters who worked to save his life were from the same department as the stolen truck.

Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak confirmed yesterday evening that Montgomery had died. He had not been formally charged in connection with the theft and the wreck.

Firefighters said that replacing the demolished tanker truck, which was insured, will cost $190,000 to $250,000.
